breaking up is hard to do
After 32 months of growing and building, the First Farragut Youth Group broke up last week into High School & Middle School UMYF. When I arrived at FFUMC there had been quite a bit of turnover in the leadership. This had obviously affected those youth who had hung in there. My goal from the beginning has been to offer the kids Christ and consistency. I wanted them to understand how a real and authentic relationship with Jesus Christ could impact their lives 24 hours a day 7 days a week 365 days a year. I wanted them to come together as middle school and high school young people to care for one another the way that Jesus cares for us. It has been a long journey to get to this place with the group. What was once a small group of clicks, unsure of what to do with a youth group, is now a large group that feels like a family, alive in their growth in Jesus Christ. As the kids realized that adults were showing up for them on a regular basis they have caught the understanding that Jesus shows up for them on a regular basis too! Last Sunday the Middle School kids met from 5:30-6:15pm. They BLASTED out of their shells and had a great time of fellowship together before we spent some time in the Word as JUST a Middle School Youth Group for the first time. From 6:15pm-6;45pm we had food and Worship ALL TOGETHER, which was a fantastic way to maintain the family feelings that we have established over the last 30 plus months! From 6:45pm-7:30pm it was all about high school. Although it was a smaller group it was fantastic to get face time with the older kids in the youth group. It was great to get down on their level and give them the attention that they deserve both from me and leadership team and from Christ. Some of the kids have been aprehensive about breaking up the 6th-12th graders, especially because of the fantastic momentum we have built as a youth group. I’m excited, though, to be able to address some topics, scriptures, and life issues that are relevant to just the middle school and high school age groups. I told both groups on Sunday that we were shrinking just a little bit (the room was a little bit more empty than any of us had been use to) so that we could grow even bigger! The goal now is to continue to grow each group to the size that we had grown together! Although breaking up is hard to do I know that God has a plan. And as we pursue 1 Timothy 4:12 during 2010 as a youth group I believe that God has a fantastic plan for us! Come check it out this Sunday on the Hill @ First Farragut! Have an awesome Thursday!
