Shortly before beginning our jobs here in East Tennessee Becca and I went on an incredible adventure! She took me to Edisto Island, South Carolina! Becca grew up vacationing there and her Grandmother had a home on Botany Bay on Edisto. It is a non-commercialized beach, with a few shops, a couple of restaurants, a GEM OF A GOLF COURSE (The plantation course @ Edisto), and the beach! It is quiet, warm, and peaceful! I always have seen myself as the type of person that would always pick skiing in the mountains over hanging out on a hot beach as a vacation. Last summer changed that for me!
There was something different about Edisto than other beaches I had hung out on. Becca took me around the Island and we did all the things that she grew up doing. We took a boat ride to Botany Bay to look for shells, we went crabbing underneath the bridge by the Old Post Office when the tide went down, we got fresh seafood from the dock each day, and we hung out on the beach getting burnt while reading magazines and jumping in the waves. Becca still loves to walk up and down the beach looking for sharks teeth…she is so cute as she sees it as an adventure of finding burried treasure! The crabbing was particularly incredible for me personally. You take a turkey or chicken neck (raw and gross) and tie it to the end of a string and you fling it out into the water. As you slowly pull it back in you can feel through the string the crabs biting into the turkey neck. The crabs follow the turkey neck all the way to the edge of the water and right into your dip net!! It is crazy! As long as the blue crabs are bigger than an index card you can take them home. We caught them last summer and went home and boiled them and had crab for lunch!
The golf course on Edisto was renovated just a few years ago and is an absolute GEM! It plays through the swamps on the Island and has a TON OF WATER all over it. Although only 6,100 yards long, it plays a lot longer as you must be straight and on cue with all of your distances to shoot a good score! If you keep your eyes open you’ll catch a Gator hanging out on the sides of the water! I was only able to play it once during our short visit last summer, shooting a 99, which felt a lot better than it shows with all the balls I donated to the reptiles of the plantation course!
We leave for Edisto Island tomorrow morning, on a family vacation with all of Becca’s family (Mom & Dad, Brother & sister in law, Aunt, and 5 extended family from the Northeast!). We are renting a 2nd row beach house and hanging out for a FULL WEEK! It has been since I was a kid that I took a full week to do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! It is going to be a fantastic vacation, I hope, as we do all kinds of fun things in and around the island. Crabbing, Golfing @ Edisto and nearby Stono Ferry, going to Kiawah Island for an incredible brunch on Sundays, Kiyaking out to Botany Bay to look for shells, going out for dinners, relaxing on the beach! We have been counting down the days until we leave…and the countdown is down to one! Internet is at the house, so I’ll be in touch with you all to tell you about our adventures on the island! Have a great Friday & I’ll see you all in a week!
